Birth/marriage/death
records (XVIe-1859) :
All parish baptism, marriage and burial records before
1792, and all civil records drawn up before 1859 in the 12 Parisian
"arrondissements" (subdivision of a city) and the suburbs completely
annexed in 1860, disappeared in May 1871 in the fires of the Law courts of Paris.
It
was estimated that eight million records were destroyed.
First
restoration of the Parisian Records :
A
law of february 12, 1872 prescribed the restoration of the Parisian records previous to
1860.
About 3 millions records dating mostly from the XIXe century were restored :
They
are divided in 3 sets (birth/marriage/death) and were arranged in chronological order.
Three alphabetical files permit to check if the requiring record was restored. Records and
files are in microfilm and viewable for free.

CENSUSES
In 1926,
1931, 1936 and 1946 lists of names were made after a quinquennial (every 5 years) census.
The lists
of names were drawn up by arrondissement, block and streets (not always classified in the
alphabetical order); then for each building, they list every member of same family by
date of birth and profession. The lists of names are in microfilm.

ELECTORAL REGISTERS
The
political electoral registers are classified by date and by "arrondissement"
(subdivision of the city). Many lists concerning the second half of the XIXe century are
missing, the years 1871 and 1892 are complete. From 1900 to 1960, almost every year
and the majority of the arrondissements are represented. From 1960, every list was kept.
The electoral registers are available for consultation. Some of them will be soon
in microfilm.
There are 3 more files of electors :
The first two (1860-1870 and 1921-1939), drawn up by the prefecture of the Seine,
specify the date and birthplace as well as the address and profession of the
electors. The third is a part of the electoral file of INSEE: for each elector born in
Paris or in the department of the Seine between 1891 and 1959, it provides the chronology
of the registrations and cancellations on the electoral lists.
Lists of electors of the
conciliation board are the most interesting list of professional elections, they count a very
significant part of the workers. The Oldest go back to 1890.

MILITARY
CENSUSES, MILITARY RECRUITMENTS
The lists of military census count every young man living Paris at the time of
their twentieth year. In fact alphabetical lists by arrondissement provide the following
information: birthplace, profession, degrees, name and addresses of the parents.
Annual alphabetical tables, incorporated in the registers, facilitate the consultation .
There are also some draft military lists of people coming from the suburbs. There
are some more draft military lists (1810-1905) of people from Paris and the suburbs.
The regiment rolls coming from the military recruitments of the department
from 1868 to 1929 were saved. Those registers contain the regiment rolls classified by
number and also the descriptive report concerning the military service of the
draftees.
The annual alphabetical tables are in microfilm and provide the number of the
required draftee. The registration has been made by "class", (recruitments of
people who are 20 years old) so you ll find a draftee born in 1902 in the table of
1922.

FOUND CHILDREN
Created by Vincent saint de Paul under the "ancien regime", the
assistance of the found children and the orphans is occured by several hospitals which
amalgamated in the "service of the assisted children" in 1838. To find the
trace of an "assisted" child, it is necessary to start from available
repertories(they are in microfilm), which reveal the serial number of the required child;
it continues with the chronological registers and the personal files of admission. It can
be also research in the documents relating to the placements in boardings.
